In the public sector, Mallan Aliyu has served as the Secretary to the Niger State Government, demonstrating his deep commitment to regional administration and governance. He has held significant positions, including Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministries of Communication and Industries, where he played a crucial role in overseeing the policies and growth of these vital sectors.

In the private sector, Mallan Aliyu’s notable contributions include serving as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank (NIDB), which has since evolved into the Bank of Industry, furthering the nation's industrial growth. He also held leadership positions as Chairman of Intercellular Nigeria Limited, Chairman of ICON Merchant Bank, and Deputy Chairman of the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL).
